Sustainability

Our Sustainability Approach

Sustainability at Kokeb Enterprises is not a corporate programme — it is baked into our identity as a Zambian-owned company committed to building a better Zambia for future generations.

We believe that infrastructure development, done right, is one of the most powerful tools for human development. Roads that connect communities, energy that powers homes and businesses, water systems that protect health, and buildings that provide safe, productive environments — these are the things Kokeb builds, and their impact extends far beyond the projects themselves.

Community Impact

We build in communities and take our responsibility to those communities seriously — through employment, local procurement, and direct social investment in the places where we work.

Environmental Stewardship

We manage our environmental footprint carefully — minimising disturbance, preventing pollution, and rehabilitating sites after project completion to leave them better than we found them.

Zambian Ownership

As a 100% Zambian-owned company, our success directly benefits Zambia — through tax contributions, employment, skills development, and reinvestment of profits locally.

Integrated Approach

Sustainability commitments are integrated into how we plan projects, hire staff, procure materials, manage sites, and deliver to clients — not a separate programme.

02
People

Community Impact

When Kokeb is active in a community, we want to leave it better than we found it — not just through the infrastructure we build, but through the jobs we create, the businesses we support, and the direct contributions we make.

Community Employment

On every project, we prioritise hiring workers from the local community wherever the required skills are available — keeping income in the community and building local capacity.

Local Business Support

We actively procure goods and services from local businesses — food, accommodation, hardware, fuel, and specialist services — extending the economic benefit of each project.

Community Relations

Kokeb project teams engage respectfully and proactively with communities — communicating about project activities and managing impacts like dust, noise, and traffic.

Grievance Mechanism

We operate a community grievance mechanism on all significant projects — providing a transparent, accessible way for community members to raise concerns and receive a timely response.

03
Workforce

Local Employment

Building Zambian capacity — at every level of our business — is one of the most important contributions we can make to the long-term development of Zambia's infrastructure sector.

Our Employment Commitment

Kokeb Enterprises is committed to maximising Zambian employment at all levels — from site workers and operators through to technicians, engineers, project managers, and corporate professionals. We do not import skills that can be found in Zambia, and we actively invest in developing Zambian talent where skills gaps exist.

Workforce Composition

The overwhelming majority of our workforce is Zambian. This is not simply a matter of regulation or client requirement — it is a core commitment. We believe Zambia has the talent to build its own infrastructure, and Kokeb is in the business of proving it.

Skills Development Programme

  • Structured on-the-job training for site workers across all trades
  • Apprenticeship programmes for young Zambian technical professionals
  • Graduate programme for young Zambian engineers and quantity surveyors
  • Leadership development for promising mid-career professionals
  • Sponsorship for professional registration and continuing education

Gender Inclusion

We are committed to increasing the representation of women in our workforce — including in technical, engineering, and management roles where women have historically been under-represented. We actively work to create an inclusive working environment where talent is the only criterion for opportunity.

Impact Beyond Kokeb

The skills and experience our people develop at Kokeb do not stay within the company — they flow out into the broader Zambian economy as engineers and professionals move to new roles, start businesses, and mentor the next generation. In this way, investing in Zambian capacity at Kokeb has a multiplier effect across the sector.

04
Environment

Environmental Stewardship

Infrastructure development inevitably affects the natural environment. Our responsibility is to minimise that impact — managing our activities carefully, rehabilitating what we disturb, and working towards more environmentally sustainable methods of construction and engineering.

Environmental Management

All Kokeb project sites operate under an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) or equivalent environmental controls. These plans identify environmental risks specific to each project, specify the controls to be applied, and assign responsibility for monitoring and compliance.

Key Environmental Commitments

  • Minimising vegetation clearance to the absolute minimum required for the project
  • Implementing effective erosion and sedimentation controls on all earthworks sites
  • Preventing and responding promptly to any fuel, chemical, or waste spills
  • Managing waste — minimising generation, maximising reuse, and ensuring proper disposal
  • Protecting water bodies, watercourses, and groundwater from pollution
  • Rehabilitating all project areas disturbed during construction on completion
  • Minimising dust, noise, and vibration impacts on communities and wildlife

Renewable Energy

Through our Energy and Utilities division, Kokeb actively contributes to Zambia's transition towards renewable energy — delivering solar power systems and hybrid energy solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support a lower-carbon future for Zambia.

Carbon Awareness

We are increasingly conscious of the carbon footprint of construction activity. We actively seek to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, optimise construction sequencing to reduce equipment idle time, and specify lower-impact materials where these meet the required technical standards.

05
Social

Social Investment

Beyond our project-based community commitments, Kokeb Enterprises makes direct social investments in the communities and causes that are most important to the development of Zambia.

Education Sponsorship

Sponsorships for promising Zambian students in engineering and technical disciplines, contributions to school infrastructure, and career guidance programmes for secondary school students.

Vocational Training

Partnerships with vocational training institutions and technical colleges to develop artisans and technicians who will form the backbone of Zambia's construction sector.

Community Infrastructure

Where our project activities impact communities, we look for opportunities to leave a lasting legacy — water points, community facilities, or access roads that benefit residents long-term.

Health & Sport

Support for community health initiatives, local sports, and cultural events that strengthen social cohesion and quality of life in the communities where our people live and work.

06
Identity

Zambian Ownership

Being 100% Zambian-owned is not just a commercial fact about Kokeb Enterprises — it is a statement of identity, purpose, and commitment.

There are many capable infrastructure and engineering companies operating in Zambia. But Kokeb is different in one fundamental respect: we are built by Zambians, owned by Zambians, managed by Zambians, and committed above all else to Zambia's development.

Profits Stay in Zambia

Our profits are reinvested in Zambia — not repatriated to foreign shareholders. Our success builds Zambian wealth, supports Zambian families, and funds Zambian ambitions.

Local Decision-Making

All decisions are made locally — responsive to Zambian context, client needs, and community considerations. No approval chains to head offices in other countries.

Tax Contribution

Tax contributions remain in Zambia, supporting public services and national development. We are a net contributor to the public finances that serve all Zambians.

Long-Term Commitment

Our long-term commitment is to Zambia's infrastructure sector — not to short-term profit extraction. We are building an institution that will outlast any individual project.

Local Content Leadership

As Zambia's government and major mining investors increasingly prioritise local content in their contracts and procurement, Kokeb is positioned to be the partner of choice — offering genuine local ownership and a proven track record, not a nominal local presence created for compliance purposes.

Our Vision for a Zambian Infrastructure Industry

We believe Zambia deserves a world-class, locally-owned infrastructure industry. Kokeb's success — building capability, winning projects, delivering to the highest standards, and growing sustainably — is part of demonstrating that Zambian-owned companies can compete and excel at the highest level.

07
Reporting

Sustainability Reports

We are committed to transparent reporting on our sustainability performance — sharing honestly what we have achieved, where we have fallen short, and what we are working to improve.

Our Reporting Commitment

As Kokeb Enterprises grows, we are developing our sustainability reporting framework — moving from informal tracking of key performance indicators to structured, transparent reporting that provides clients, partners, and communities with meaningful information about our social and environmental performance.

Key Performance Areas We Track

  • Safety performance — lost time injuries, near-misses, safety observations
  • Workforce composition — Zambian employment percentage at all levels
  • Local procurement value and percentage
  • Training hours and skills development investment
  • Environmental incidents and non-conformances
  • Community grievances and resolution
  • Social investment value and beneficiaries
