Kokeb Silica Mine Operations

Kokeb owns a silica mine near Barrick Gold’s Lumwana Mine. The silica mined is supplied to First Quantum’s Kansanshi Mine, where it is used in the extraction of copper. Silicon diocide, also known as silica, plays an essential role in the extraction of copper from copper ore. Known for its strength and durability, silica is a versatile compound that acts as a flux when heated to high temperatures.

Silica has multiple roles during smelting. Firstly, it helps form a barrier between the mmolten copper metal and other non-metallic substances found in ore. This ensures no contaminants enter into the molten metal, which could affect its strength and purity. Secondly, silica helps  keep impurities like iron oxide suspended in the slag later so they can be easily removed without contaminating the metal itself. Finally, it acts as a flux agent when heated at high temperatures, which helps facilitate reactions during smelting
