Infrastructure & Civil Engineering

100+kmRoads Delivered
NCC IContractor Grade
15+Years Experience

Kokeb delivers robust civil infrastructure that forms the backbone of economic activity. From road construction across hundreds of kilometres to drainage systems, industrial hardstands, and bridges — our civil engineering capability is both broad and technically deep.

We are experienced in working in remote and logistically challenging environments — particularly within the mining regions of Northwestern Province — and this experience sets us apart from contractors who operate only in urban or easily accessible areas. Mining clients, government agencies, and logistics operators choose Kokeb because we can deliver where others cannot.

As an NCC Grade I certified contractor in civil engineering, Kokeb meets the highest classification for civil construction works under Zambia's National Council for Construction. This certification is mandatory for many large government and mining contracts and assures clients of our technical systems, qualified personnel, and financial capacity to execute significant programmes.

Road Construction & Rehabilitation

Road construction is the foundational capability of Kokeb's civil division. We have delivered over 100 kilometres of road works across Zambia — from gravel access tracks for remote mining sites to major arterial road rehabilitation programmes.

Road Construction Types

Gravel Roads

Formation, shaping, gravelling, and compaction of gravel roads to engineering specifications for mining and rural access applications.

Bitumen Seal Roads

Preparation, priming, and application of single and double bitumen seal surfaces for higher-traffic road environments.

Road Rehabilitation

Assessment and upgrade of deteriorated road surfaces — reshaping, regravelling, drainage restoration, and surface treatment to extend road life.

Internal Mine Road Networks

Design and construction of internal mine haul roads, access roads, and plant area road networks to mining operational standards.

Geometric Design & Setting Out

Road geometry setting out, horizontal and vertical alignment, superelevation, and sight distance compliance for all road types.

Road Drainage Works

Side drains, turnouts, mitre drains, drifts, and culverts that protect road surfaces from water damage across all terrain.

Working in Remote Environments

Unlike many civil contractors who operate exclusively in urban areas, Kokeb has extensive experience delivering road programmes in remote and logistically challenging locations — including areas with limited fuel infrastructure, minimal accommodation options, and difficult seasonal access. We mobilise self-sufficiently, maintain our own plant, and manage programmes under conditions that many contractors find prohibitive.

Scale Delivery: Kokeb's civil teams have demonstrated the capacity to operate multiple working fronts simultaneously across large linear road programmes — a critical capability for clients with tight construction windows or phased programme requirements.

Earthworks & Drainage

Bulk earthworks and drainage infrastructure form the foundation upon which all other construction activity depends. Kokeb has the equipment, experience, and technical discipline to deliver large-scale earthworks and complex drainage systems to engineering specification.

Earthworks Capabilities

Bulk Excavation

Large-volume excavation for basements, platforms, ponds, channels, and site preparation using tracked excavators and rigid-frame trucks.

Cut & Fill Balancing

Earthworks designed to minimise haul distances and imported fill — optimising programme cost and schedule efficiency through accurate volume analysis.

Land Clearing & Grubbing

Clearing of natural bush, tree removal, stump grubbing, and topsoil stripping to prepare sites for development in all terrain types.

Engineered Fill Placement

Controlled placement and compaction of fill material in layers to specified density — tested and documented throughout to engineering QA standards.

Retaining Structures

Retaining walls, gabions, and slope stabilisation works to manage cut faces, embankments, and sensitive ground conditions safely.

Slope Stabilisation

Assessment and treatment of unstable slopes — benching, drainage, geotextiles, and vegetation for long-term stability in challenging terrain.

Drainage & Stormwater

Effective drainage is critical to the performance and longevity of all infrastructure in Zambia's climate. Our drainage engineering capability includes: open channel and lined channel design and construction; culvert sizing, supply, and installation; catchpit, manhole, and inspection chamber construction; stormwater retention ponds and attenuation features; and drainage integration with road and building works. All drainage works are designed to account for local rainfall intensity, catchment area, and permissible head levels.

Bridges & Structural Civil Works

River crossings, bridge structures, and box culverts present some of the most technically demanding challenges in civil infrastructure delivery. Kokeb has the engineering expertise and structural construction experience to deliver these works safely, to specification, and within programme.

Structural Civil Capabilities

Box Culverts

Precast and in-situ box culvert installation for major drainage crossings and access road stream crossings at all load classes.

Pipe Crossings

Armco pipe and concrete pipe crossings for drainage and access — sized to hydraulic requirements and installed to pavement standards.

Concrete Bridge Structures

Reinforced concrete bridge decks, abutments, wing walls, and approach fills for permanent crossing structures on public and mine roads.

River Crossing Management

Temporary access management, coffer dams, diversion channels, and dewatering during river crossing construction in seasonal conditions.

Industrial Hardstands

Reinforced concrete hardstands and pavements designed for heavy static and dynamic loads — plant slabs, laydown areas, and workshop aprons.

Foundations & Plinths

Strip, pad, and raft foundations for buildings, equipment, tanks, and plant structures to structural engineer specifications.

Quality & Engineering Standards

All structural civil works are delivered under engineering oversight with full materials testing, compaction testing, and concrete cube testing recorded throughout. Kokeb maintains QA documentation for every structural element — providing clients with a full record of what was built, when, and to what standard. This documentation is essential for asset management, maintenance planning, and handover to operations teams.

Equipment Fleet

OwnFleet Owned
FastMobilisation
RemoteCapable Sites

Kokeb's civil division operates its own plant and equipment fleet — enabling rapid mobilisation without dependence on external hire. This self-sufficiency is a significant advantage in remote locations where equipment availability can be unreliable and hire costs prohibitive.

Civil Plant Fleet Includes

  • Tracked excavators — multiple sizes for excavation, trenching, and loading operations
  • Motor graders — for road shaping, gravel spreading, and fine grading operations
  • Smooth drum vibratory rollers — for subgrade, base, and bitumen compaction
  • Padfoot vibratory rollers — for engineered fill layer compaction to specification
  • Front-end loaders — for material handling, loading, and stockpile management
  • Tipper trucks — rigid-frame and articulated trucks for bulk earthworks and material haulage
  • Water bowser — dust suppression, compaction water, and site amenity supply
  • Concrete mixer trucks and concrete batching capability
  • Survey equipment — total stations, GPS, and levels for setting out and QA

Maintenance & Reliability

Our plant is maintained under a formal preventative maintenance programme — with daily pre-shift inspections, scheduled service intervals, and a parts procurement system that minimises unplanned downtime. On-site mechanical support is included in major projects. This maintenance discipline is what allows Kokeb to maintain programme productivity in remote environments where breakdowns have no easy solutions.
